    Shutdown Day

Posted by Gene in Random Stuff

    Shut Down Day
May 3, 2008 is Shutdown Day, you can do it. C’mon it’s on a Saturday too!

It is obvious that without computers we would find our life extremely difficult, maybe even impossible. If they disappeared for just one day, would we be able to cope?

Be part of one of the biggest global experiments ever to take place on the Internet. The idea behind Shutdown Day is to find out how many people can go without a computer for one whole day, and what will happen if we all participate!

Shutdown your computer on 03 May 2008 and find out!

What will you do instead of user your computer that day? If you are like me, your brain could use the rest.

MIT prof Edward Lorenz, father of chaos theory, dies at 90

Posted by Gene in Random Stuff

Edward LorenzGiven that our Name is “Period Three”, which if you are a true geek understand it has “something” to do with Chaos Theory. Noticed the loss of Edward Lorenz, widely held accountable for creating Chaos Theory and from which comes the Period Three concept.

Edward Lorenz, an MIT meteorologist who tried to explain why it is so hard to make good weather forecasts and wound up unleashing a scientific revolution called chaos theory, died April 16 of cancer at his home in Cambridge. He was 90.

    His MIT bio
NY Times article about his death
    Wired article

What Period Three in the mathematical sense is about. Here’s another.

    Evel Knievel Gone

Posted by Gene in Random Stuff

To all those who once owned an Evel Knievel stunt cycle (with or without the gyro launcher), please take a moment to remember the man who gave it all for the glory of the thrill. Evel was truly “extreme” before it was cool…

Evel Knievel, the daredevil motorcycle stuntman who made sensational jumps over cars and double-decker buses in the 1970s and broke dozens of bones in even more sensational crashes, has died. He was 69.

    Kindle

Posted by Gene in Random Stuff

kindleEverybody already knows about Kindle, or if you spend time on the internet you do. I’ll reserve my full judgment until I can actually hold one, not that I am anytime soon. I will have to say the initial idea is pretty far flung. Don’t get me wrong, the idea of an e-book reader isn’t new by any means, and after all Apple did reinvent the mp3 player industry by introducing the iPod. Check it out here and oh 37signals has their opinion too ().

    Halloween disappointment

Posted by Gene in Random Stuff

This is truly sad. The bum who happens to own Halloween.com can’t even see fit to hire a design company to create a good looking site. This has to be one of the coolest domain names out there, and you could have so much fun with this website. What a waste…

    Paper Record Player

Posted by Gene in Random Stuff

paper record playerThis is truly awesome, I would really like to hear one of these working.

Fully working, manual record player made entirely of paper. To play the record the handle needs to be turned in a clockwise direction at a steady 331/3rpm. The paper cone then acts as a pickup, amplifying the sound enough to make it audible.

Dean Kamen will save the world

Posted by Gene in Random Stuff

sterlingI love this guy, in my opinion he’s the worlds foremost, builder/inventor/gadgeteer/thinker/geek… His sterling engine project(s) certainly raise my eyebrows. Especially if you consider that he can engineer one to run on just about any kind of junk:

“We run two villages in Bangladesh on Stirlings that run on freakin’ cow dung,” says Kamen, who envisions Stirling engines powering the world’s off-the-grid villages and using the waste heat produced by the engine to purify water.

Putting one of his sterlings into this “smart car” made by Think, this would probably extend its mileage by hundreds of miles, that’s crazy… If only there were more “thinkers” like him in the world, or if our government would forego the oil company lobbies’ money, we could quite possibly change the way we consume energy across our country. I wish Kamen was an American inventor so we could have him all to ourselves, but then again, perhaps he’ll actually make a difference in England…
