    Tumblr

Posted by Gene in Social Web, Blogging

TumblrWe have several clients that we have setup blogs for over the past few months and we normally (almost always) use Wordpress. We’ll setup an installed version of Wordpress next to their website and pull in their post feed onto their main homepage or some sub section via RSS. We’ve done this with Twitter RSS feeds as well. I don’t really want to get into a Tumblr vs. Wordpress discussion, i’ve read them and honestly it’s not really comparing apples to apples.

Tumblr is possibly one of the easiest ways you can run your own blog on the internet, and it’s FREE. In their own words:

Tumblr lets you effortlessly share anything. Post text, photos, quotes, links, music, and videos, from your browser, phone, desktop, email, or wherever you happen to be. You can customize everything, from colors, to your theme’s HTML. Even use your own domain name.

Tumblr really is a blogging engine at heart, but it’s more like a purist cross between a blog and Twitter. It really shines if you are looking to make short/quick posts, post pictures or video files. The thing is it’s not as intimidating as a full featured blog, the system gets out of the way because it’s so simple and you don’t have to worry about all the moving parts. You can just focus on what you’re posting and get on with your life.

    UMS Video Podcast

Posted by Gene in Usability, Blogging

We’re up to episode 8 now. How are we doing?

This week we focus on Mailchimp (mailchimp.com), Sustainable Party (sustainableparty.com), and Ryan O’Rourke (ryan-orourke.com).

I felt like we took Mailchimp.com to task on their user signup process. I think it’s a lesson in a successful web app that still needs some tweaking.

Okay, perhaps some of you don’t know that we run unmatchedstyle.com, it’s a design review website and gallery focusing on sites built using web-standards. We’re rolling out a weekly video podcast where we will be reviewing a few of the better websites that make their way onto the site each week. It’s only 10 minutes so hopefully that won’t take up too much time. Head on over there and see what you think.

Technorati: State of the Blogosphere 2008

Posted by Gene in Marketing, Blogging

TechnochartTechnorati has released their State of the Blogosphere 2008 report, which is all based on a blogger survey they conducted which we were part of here at Period Three and unmatchedstyle.com.

For the first time, we surveyed bloggers directly about the role of blogging in their lives, the tools, time, and resources used to produce their blogs, and how blogging has impacted them personally, professionally, and financially.

Generally they report that Blogs are here in a HUGE way, they are mainstream now and most large scale media organizations are entering or have entered the Blog space. Mostly the big brands, chances are that if you are a big brand you are launching or have launched a Blog presence on the web. They also go on to recognize that chances are really high that if you are a big brand then whether you’ve launched your own controlled Blog presence or not, you already have one, for good or bad. Bloggers are already going to be talking about you (much like off-line word of mouth, duh.)

The most interesting piece of info was the reported money Bloggers are making, apparently if you have 100,000 or more visitors a month your making more than $75K - sign me up!

The majority of bloggers we surveyed currently have advertising on their blogs. Among those with advertising, the mean annual investment in their blog is $1,800, but it’s paying off. The mean annual revenue is $6,000 with $75K+ in revenue for those with 100,000 or more unique visitors per month.
