    Vista Schmista

Posted by Gene in Operating Systems

Funny conversation “in my head mind you” for an IT manager trying to make a case to his CEO for an upgrade to Vista for their entire corporate operations

“We need to spend $150,000 on the upgrades to vista ultimate.” — “what do we get for that money?” — “well. the same poor security, a giant backdoor to operations information, IE7, some shiny interface trinkets, and some other stuff.” — “what other stuff?” — “beta level software bugs.” — “yeah, no.”

At least that’s how I imagine it would go…

This is closer to the truth than you might think. I’ve been “given” it on my new laptop at work, and much of those things are indeed present. The most torturous part is that most software vendors haven’t updated their products for it yet, so there’s still a lot you cannot do.

Meanwhile, Apple has launched about half a dozen new OS versions in the same amount of time… Is it possible Microsoft has lost it’s ability to innovate?

Sure, it’s more than possible — their business practices these days mostly preclude innovation despite the fact they (ab)use it as one of their marketing buzzwords. They appear to have almost stopped trying to come up with new ideas and instead go out and look for cool, existing ideas, then purchase them. From a business standpoint, that’s perfectly fine with such deep pockets and a very healthy profit margin. But from a user standpoint, it’s pretty disappointing in the grand scheme of things.

To go a totally different way here, I’m sure there are lots of great ideas that Microsoft employees come up with. They have a lot of very smart people working there. But from what I hear the bureacracy within their organization often hampers things. Perhaps upper management doesn’t listen as much as it should.
